The Abbey is situated in the wooded River Rye valley near Helmsley, North Yorkshire, in the northeast of England and has an enviable position. The River Rye valley at this point is heavily wooded and provides shelter to lower lying farmland.
The Abbey and Monastery Mont-Saint-Michel is, really, two places: the historic religious structures at the top of the island mountain, and the town below that supported it in ancient times and today.
