The day began when our boatman collected us at our guesthouse at the north end of Inle Lake, a shallow and beautiful body of water surrounded by mountains in Shan State.

If I needed another reason to believe Burma is on the edge of emerging from a bygone era, this passing oxcart provided the evidence, as I stepped from a temple onto the side of the road.
World famous, Mandalay Marionettes Theatre is keeping this traditional performance art form alive for the Burmese people and for visitors to this northern Burma city. Originally a royal entertainment, it’s now available to all.
A friend and I walked across New Bagan in the late afternoon, destination the Green Elephant Restaurant, where the main road crosses the highway and dead-ends at the bluff overlooking the Irrawaddy.
On my first visit to Portland, Oregon I drove east of the city one day to have a look at the much-celebrated scenery of the Columbia River. Pulling off at a view point I saw this group also admiring the view and, having recently returned from a visit to Burma, I knew a monk when I saw one.
Getting to Nyaungshwe from Mandalay by air is a surreal experience. But then much of travel in Burma is, in one way or another, surreally beautiful or incongruous. In this case it’s the latter.
Bagan is not a single place but a string of settlements on a bend of the Irrawaddy River with a plain stretching eastward for many miles. It’s on the western edge of the tourist track, an oval-shaped circuit of the country with Yangon…
