We visit the Grand Hotel in Nuwara Eliya, Sri Lanka. Situated in the heart of the tea growing region of the country, the cooler climate of the region was popular with the English who lived here during the 19th century. The Grand Hotel itself is a beautiful relic of the period of British Colonial rule on the island.
The classic image of the central Hill Country in Sri Lanka is that of its seemingly endless tea plantations — carefully groomed and well-tended as tea’s an important cash crop for this small island. With the tea comes a small army of tea pickers, or pluckers.
The coastal regions of Sri Lanka are fairly flat. Given that and the relatively small size of the island, I was surprised to find impressive peaks (over 2500 m high) at its center. This is where the country’s tea is grown.
