Spotted along the Malecon in Havana, this piece of limestone, whose softer elements have been washed away by years of water, looks almost as if it were soft ribbons of lace.

About the last place on earth I’d have thought to buy lovely hand-woven lace was Sri Lanka. The world’s best tea — of course, but lace seemed improbable. But the proof was right there and it was lovely.
