Modern travel often makes complete strangers sit in close proximity for hours at a time. This has the potential to be a very pleasant possibility, or very annoying.
So how likely are you to have a chatty seatmate? Not very it seems. Only about 5% of travelers in this survey by the Chicago Tribune always make a point of talking to those they travel with. About a quarter of travelers frequently talk to their fellow travelers.
How about you? Do you make a point of talking to strangers when you're flying? On a train? Do you only speak if spoken to?
I usually have plenty of work to do when I'm flying, so while I don't mind a few pleasantries, I generally keep to myself. I'm polite, but not encouraging.
