Rail bargain: Scenic France to Spain for €1

The editors of Europe by Rail have found a bargain worth waiting for when travel gets easier: A four-hour train ride from Avignon, France to Portbou in Spain with tickets as low as €1 when bought far enough in advance.

Even at the normal price of €44.80 it’s not a bad price for a four-hour ride from the heart of Provence over the Pyrennees, stopping at Perpignan and ending in a coastal city mentioned as “a world apart from mass tourism.” Along the way, the route passes areas admired and painted by artists as diverse as Dali, Matisse and Picasso.

Europe by Rail advises that while tickets at the €1 price are limited, they are frequently available as little as two weeks ahead.
